Sarah Palin is..."Becca" from Beloved TV show Life Goes On

Fear not, the Shimm will get to the bottom of this. The controversy is beginning to swirl around when exactly did John McCain know that Gov. Palin had once played "Becca" on Life Goes On? I don't know about you guys and gals, but I always thought "Becca" was sort of a bitch--she could just be so mean to Corky. (What kind of name is that to give a boy with Down syndrome, anyways?)

The Walkmen -- You & Me

Lead singer of the Walkmen, Hamilton Leithauser, has a weird name and an even weirder voice---a peculiar slightly atonal blend of Bob Dylan, Neil Diamond and maybe Shane MacGowan of the Pogues. Over the course of a few albums, the Walkmen have learned to create music, sonic textures and occasionally songs befitting Leithauser's unusual vocals. But not all the time, sometimes Leithauser just sounds inebriated and out of tune. And, some songs start out promising and either devolve into drunken yelping or just fail to build into fully realized "songs." You & Me definitely suffers from being a little long. Note that Beach Boys-style minimal percussion on "Canadian Girl."

New Of Montreal -- Skeletal Lamping

Of Montreal's new album Skeletal Lamping will be released in early October. It's weird, f'sho. Anyone familiar with Of Montreal should likely be prepared for that. My first impression, about half of the album reminds me why I find much of the Fiery Furnaces so infuriating--a restless quality combined with deliberate weirdness. But a handful of songs hit their mark. In his confident defiance of conventional song structure, Of Montreal's brainchild Kevin Barnes reminds me of David Bowie, except that Barnes really can sing when he wants to. But while despite Barnes' obvious talent and confidence, I'm not sure he's pulled off his Ziggy Stardust or Hunky Dory yet. Maybe a 100% consistent, song-oriented album is too safe, too expected for Kevin Barnes. Until then, I remain uncertain as to whether I really like listening to Of Montreal albums.

October 10th @ Middle East -- Morning Benders (and Ra Ra Riot)

I was buying tickets for the Ra Ra Riot show on October 10 at the Middle East ($12 bucks), when I found out that the Morning Benders would be opening. I only know of a handful of MB tunes, but they are doozies.

Yes We Can (Can)!!

I strongly urge the Obama Campaign to incorporate "Yes We Can Can," the Pointer Sister's late-70's disco-r&b-soul classic into the campaign soundtrack. It is a lot better than that lame-o country tune played after Obama's near-perfect acceptance speech last night. And I'm not a huge fan of classical-flamenco guitar jams, but "Ixtapa" demonstrates how re-goddamn-diculous Rodrigo y Gabriela are as guitarists. Kudos to them for showing a modicum of restraint at times, giving their songs and guitars a chance to breathe, rather than burying the listener in technique and furious guitar playing (i.e. Omar Rodriguez Lopez of Mars Volta).

Bloc Party is Boring Me

Bloc Party, when did you cease to rock out? I remember the initial Bloc
Party singles like "Banquet" and "Positive Tension" being dramatic, slightly
affected, but in the end all that drama built up to a great hook and a great
groove. Still, Bloc Party's new album Intimacy isn't bad. It's just not that
interesting either. Intimacy could use a remix.

Ra Ra Riot!!!!

This band is growing all over me. And they just might blow big time. Appreciate them while they are small. "A Manner to Act" is my second-favorite song off the self-titled debut EP. Their new album The Rhumb Line just came out last week and it's pretty good.

Brand New Stereolab!

With Stereolab, it's always about catching fleeting moments of some of the most loveliest mix of keyboard, drums, horns, bass and guitar. Occasionally, lead singer Lætitia Sadier steps on these lovely melodies by not taking a breather and the album is a little long at 16 songs. But its strongest tunes on Chemical Chords rank as some of the best that Stereolab has ever made. I didn't include "Daisy Click Clack" but it's pop that only Stereolab (ok, maybe Yo La Tengo) can make. Creative departments at Madison Avenue advertising firms need to start mining Stereolab's treasure trove (to be exact, 9 albums and 7 compilations) of fleeting moments of alterna-indie-pop bliss.

It's Time for an Instrumental Interlude brought to you by Peter, Bjorn and John

"Inland Empire" didn't sound like what I expected with its gun shot drum beat. For those expecting some sort of "Young Folks"-like tune, this isn't it. There's no whistling or any vocals at all.

Dr. Dog -- the Ark

Dr. Dog: the Ark

Dr. Dog recently got dissed by Ian Cohen of Pitchfork :
...Maybe their version of "realness" triggers an unfortunate sense of self-loathing, because "Beatles-esque" has for so long been the preeminent last-resort adjective for critics-- virtually meaningless, undeniably lazy, avoided at all costs.
And then Cohen goes on to be a lazy music critic by comparing "the Ark" to the Beatles' "I want you, she's so heavy." I agreed with his previous statement: that Beatles comparison was meaningless, lazy and to be avoided. Ian, I don't know why you loathe yourself, but I'll bet it's not Dr. Dog's fault. I just can't hate on Dr. Dog from emulating the creme de la creme of bands like Beatles, the Kinks, the Band, and Pink Floyd without sounding totally derivative.

The Stata Center a.k.a. that funky Frank Gehry building on M.I.T.'s campus

Frank Gehry designed the Stata Center on the campus of Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge. As you can see below, the Stata Center has not yet been completed. And all those crazy angles have led to “design and construction failures” resulting in “masonry cracking,” “poor drainage” at the outdoor amphitheater, “persistent leaks,” “sliding ice and snow from the building,” and “mold growth.” So basically you don't want to be walking any where near this building if it's raining hard or the snow is melting.

My music taste is random

By and large, today's R&B is unbelievably bad as if infected by American Idolitis--all flash and no sizzle, totally lacking in soul. John Legend hasn't lived up to his name yet--at least not for a whole album. But he has his moments. I still got "Save Room" off 2006's Once Again on my iPod. "Green Light" is perhaps more of a return to form for Outkast's Andre 3000 as Legend only sings the chorus.

This ain't your average remix

Studio's Yearbook 2 has been one of my favorite albums of the year. The concept is sort of interesting for a follow-up to their excellent Yearbook as they chose to remix or remake songs by a fairly diverse and somewhat obscure group of artists ranging from Kylie Minogue to the Rubies to the Shout Out Louds. The amazing thing is Studio ends up making it all sound cohesive on Yearbook 2.

There is Still Time to Get on the Bandwagon....

Ra Ra Riot's best song off their debut EP "Dying is Fine" is, sadly, a little prophetic. Shortly after finishing the mini-album, drummer John Pike was found dead. But the band has carried on and will be releasing a new album, The Rhumb Line, on August 19th. Bloggers are starting to sweat Ra Ra Riot, but I'm not convinced the rest of the EP is nearly as good as "Dying is Fine." Not to take the piss out of a good up-and-coming band, but Ra Ra Riot's best moments sound perhaps a little too reminiscent of Vampire Weekend.

The Stills are Back!!! Cette Bande Est La Merde!

The Stills are without a doubt my favorite band from Montreal. Oceans Will Rise is their third album and will be released on August 19 (this tuesday). On their last album, Without Feathers, the Stills got dissed slightly by critics, but that record grew all over me and the songs sounded great live. Whatever the case, Oceans Will Rise demonstrates the Stills' remarkable consistency and songwriting skills. For those phobic about all things French and/or French-Canadian, I can assure you there is zero French spoken on this record, but, seriously, you should get over that. Put down your freedom fries and start getting down on some poutine. It's about time you embraced your inner-Quebecois!
